Hammer Terminology

Poor

This means hammer runs but its overall condition is poor. There may be extensive wear in the bracket, bushings and the power cell may well be very sloppy in its casing. Hammer runs and it works. Hammers in this category are okay for very occassional use if that’s what your line of work dictates. A hammer in this category has had a hard life. Some parts may be well worn tool bit may have extensive wear and may only have a remaining 25% wear life.

Fair

This means hammer runs but its overall condition is not good. There may be wear in the bracket, bushings and hammer may well be semi sloppy in its casing. Hammer runs and it works.Hammers in this category are halfway between the good and poor category tool bit may have less than 50% wear life.

Good

This means hammer is good used. Its condition is good and hammer is still able to give good service. It has some wear but it still has some good productive life in it. We have not stripped it but checked it externally. Hooked it up, run it and put it through its paces. It runs and has no leaks. Tool bit may have wear but generally more than 50% wear life still remaining.

Serviced

This means hammer is the same as the good category but has had minor work done to it to improve it further and make it better serviceable. May have new seals fitted, new lower bush etc. Hammer is fully tested and runs and has no leaks. It’s often better than many so called ‘rebuilt’ units that we have come across in the market place. The tool bit will have 80% to 95% wear life still left.

Rebuilt

This means hammer has been gone through to make sure all parts are good and hammer will give good service. We do not chrome pistons or other parts. If parts are damaged, we throw them out and fit new parts. If impact rings have wear, we do not repair them but fit new ones. If chuck housing have very minor cracks in non critical locations, we will repair them. In all other cases of cracking, the chuck housing is scrapped and a new chuck housing will be fitted. Only good quality seals and good quality parts are used. You may pay a little more but you will get a good rebuilt hammer. Rebuilt units are fully tested and are sold with a warranty. New tool bit of your comes with the unit.

Factory Rebuilt

This means hammer has been fully rebuilt at the factory. Hammer has been thoroughly inspected and meticulously gone through step by step. Many parts are replaced. The hammer comes out of factory looking like new and is virtually as good as new.

Unused

This means hammer is unused. This means the hammer has never been commissioned or used and has zero hours. The hammer may be a year or two old but never used. Sometimes we aquire unused hammers from dealer close downs or dealer bankruptcy sales or finance repo’s.

Low Hour

Hammers in this category are used but have very low estimated hours. Typically, hammers in this category have between 100 to 200 hours on them. They are mostly rental units that have been out on municiple works or on contracts where a hammer standby has to be on site just in case it is needed; for example, on railway or subway night shutdowns. The rental income received allows us to discount the hammer price when sold. These hammers, upon return from rental are checked over, tested, repainted prior to resale. As well as low hour units, many rental units are returned with high hours and have been worked very hard. These can be found in our poor condition category.

In Rebuilt

Hammers in this category are in stripped condition and are in the process of being rebuilt and will be available once completed. If you are interested in one of these units shown, we can pull forward and rebuild this unit quicker so that it maybe sold sooner. We have to prioritize work so if we get a sale, we will pull the particular unit forward and rebuild, test and ship out as soon as possible.

For Rebuild

These hammers are chalked up for rebuild and they will be put through the rebuild process when our technicians have time to get around to working on these units or when a customer requests a particular brand and model to be rebuilt so customer can purchase. We have to prioritize work so if we get a sale, we will pull the particular unit forward and rebuild test and ship out as soon as possible. On these units, we have no idea of internal condition until we strip them down. These units will, in time, be repaired and rebuilt to exacting standards.

As-is

Hammers or equipment sold under this category are being sold as-is, where-is. We are just selling on this equipment without touching or testing. Hammers or equipment in this category maybe new, unused or used. No warranty is implied or expressed. We can ship to anywhere in the world. Shipping to be charged extra. Equipment in this category is usually aquired by one of our group companies and mostly aquired by the international trading arm.

New

This means hammer is new and has zero hours and is of recent production or will be ordered from factory for sale to you.

 Parts Availability Terminology

Poor

This means parts can be obtained but the availability is not good or is not likely to be very good in the future. There may be delays in getting parts or, in the near future, parts may be not available at all. Often, new hammer manufacturers spring up and market hammers for a while and then have to close down the factory. Parts are then no longer available. New brands of hammers on the market come and go. Hammer brands that are well established and have a big population of working hammers usually have very good parts availabilty and parts are usually available for many many years to come. Our recommendation is spend a little more money but always purchase a hammer with good current parts availability and good prospects for future parts availability.

Fair

Parts availability in this category fall midway between the good and poor categories.

Good

Parts availability in this category means availabilty is good now and likely to continue to be good into the future.

Excellent

This means the parts availability is very good. Parts are mostly available quickly and readily from many sources. Parts are available in many countries around the world. Parts are very likely to be available for many, many years to come.

 Other Terminology

Impact Class

The foot lbs rating has been in existence for several decades and is still commonly used. The foot lb rating is not the weight of the hammer. The foot lb rating refers to the energy output of the hammer. Very roughly speaking, the heavier the hammer, the higher its foot lbs energy output. This is not a hard rule and there are many exceptions. Most hammers are rated by manufacturers as being of a certain foot lbs class. This is not an accurate measurement of blow energy or energy output but is instead just a marketing scale giving customers a very rough idea of hammer output. Not all hammers in the same foot lbs class rating have the same energy output. The actual output can vary a great deal between manufacturers. Please call us and we will be happy to advise you of the size of hammer that is good for your job application and your carrier machine. We can also tell you how certain hammers perform and, across the different brands, their good points and their not so good points. There are other rating scales used but none of them are perfect, as so many different factors are in play. The foot lbs class scale is still the scale that is mostly used. Many manufacturers of cheaper hammers often over state and exaggerate the foot lbs class of their hammers in comparison with other better brands on the market.

Hammer suitable for

Hammer ‘suitable for’ terminology means hammers are usually described as being suitable for excavators between given weight ranges. For example, a particular hammer may state that it’s suitable for excavators between, say, 35,000lbs and 62,000 lbs in weight. This is just an approximate range of suitability and gives you a rough idea of the size of hammer that may be suitable. Different manufacturers often give a different range of excavator weights for hammers in a given ft lbs class. There is usually a range of carrier weights that will handle a particular hammer. This can be extended at each end of the scale depending on the type of work you usually do. Call us and we would be happy to advise you.
